Zach Ewald pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings Thursday during the championship game of the Class 4 Northwestern District tournament.

Zach Ewald and Dan Dispanet combined to pitch a five-hitter Thursday and help the Kettle Run Cougars win the Class 4 Northwestern District baseball tournament championship by beating Sherando 3-0 on the road in Stephens City despite entering the postseason as the No. 3 seed with the Warriors at No. 1.

Ewald struck out six and allowed five hits and three walks over 5 2/3 innings to give the Cougars a 14-8 record after splitting two games against Sherando during the regular season – 6-4 win after a 4-1 loss. So Kettle Run has a six-game winning streak after beginning the season only 8-8.

Dispanet added the save by pitching a perfect 1 1/3 innings with one strikeout, while Joe Vogatsky had two RBIs offensively, finishing 2-for-4. Ewald finished 2-for-3 with a triple, and going 1-for-2 were Declan Downey (run, walk) and Dispanet.
