Angelo Brizzi scored a season-high 38 points Tuesday to keep the Highland Hawks undefeated since the beginning of their 2019 schedule.
They beat Carmel 81-74 on the road in Ruther Glenn to improve their record to 15-3 with an 8-0 run since losing Dec. 28, 2018. Brizzi made five 3-pointers and topped 25 points for the first time since he transferred from Fauquier High following last season. The sophomore leads the Hawks with an average of 18.3 points per game this winter while helping Highland average 73.3 as a team.
“I think that we have proven that we can score the ball pretty efficiently at this point,” Hawks head coach Brian Hooker said. “We still need to figure out some things defensively if we are going to make the run that we think we are capable of.”
Last season, the Hawks made a run to the VISAA Division II state quarterfinals and finished with a 27-4 record. They set a program-record for wins before losing five seniors to graduation, including Highland’s career scoring leader, Mekhi Hendricks.
Brizzi has helped fill that scoring void. He made 10-of-10 free throws Tuesday while Darret Justice and Cam Timmons finished with 11 points apiece.
Highland trailed Carmel 43-42 at halftime after finishing the first period in a 25-25 tie, but the Hawks used a 17-11 run to enter the fourth quarter with a 59-54 lead. They later finished the game by making 9-of-9 free throws.
