A 49-year-old Maryland man has been indicted on charges he was married to three different women at the same time.
Steven Gardner Jr. of Capital Heights was indicted this week in Prince William County Circuit Court for bigamy. Gardner is accused of marrying three women in three different states over the course of 19 years without divorcing any of them, according to a criminal complaint filed in circuit court.
Felony bigamy cases in Virginia carry a penalty of two to ten years in prison and up to $100,000 in fines.
Gardner first married a woman in Nevada in September 1991, court records say. He then married another woman in February 1998 in New York. He also married a woman in Maryland in August 2015.
Gardner and the woman he married in Maryland lived together in Dumfries until January 2016, court filings say, which is why he is charged in Prince William County.
Police say marriage licenses and the absence of divorce filings prove Garner’s alleged bigamy.
Gardner admitted to police he knew he was still married to his previous spouses when he entered into his more recent marriages, court records say.
