An open letter to Congressman Tom Garrett, representing Virginia’s 5th District

  • 9

I write to you in a spirit of respectful and sincere concern. My father and his Rotarians were the citizen-nucleus in Jackson County, Mississippi, who urged a young Trent Lott, and then drafted him with financial support, to run as a Republican for Congress. In the 1960's Rep. Lott lead the Southern exodus from the Democratic Party that underlies today’s GOP majority. Republican roots run deep in my family.

Today millions of Americans are deeply concerned about the multiple overt and covert attacks on our country by Russian oligarchs, neo-fascists and their KGB chief. We trust in our nation’s leaders to stand against this attack by a dictatorship that has been our primary adversary for much of a century. You are such a leader, sworn to protect us from enemies foreign and domestic.

According to news reports supported by ample evidence, some of today’s Republicans in Congress are not living up to those oaths. Instead, through public comment and congressional action they are undermining the duly authorized investigation into Russian subversions of our democracy, and hence public confidence therein. Regrettably, they have become unwitting agents of Putin’s determination to weaken and corrupt our country.

Why would the political party I was raised in, the one that stood boldly with President Reagan against a Russian “evil empire,” fail in its duty to do the same now? Your Republican leadership has prematurely demanded vital FBI documents and witness reports, thus hobbling, perhaps even scuttling, a crucial on-going investigation. I am sure you are not one of those Republicans calling for an “investigation of the investigators?”

In February 1945 my father led his Marines of D Company, 28th Regiment, 5th USMC Division onto Iwo Jima beach’s lethal firestorm. Dad commanded the attack company whose patrol first secured the summit of Mt. Surabachi. (The world-famous flag was safe to raise three days later.) And in fall of 1968 I served with HQ, Third Infantry Division on the West German/ Czechoslovakian border, ready to repel Russians if they invaded NATO. My father and I stood by our oaths to protect America.

I ask that you do the same, decisively and at once. By this I mean: Right now. As a retired Army artillery officer you know it takes fire in your belly to be a patriot, idealism and courage to recognize subversion. It requires guts, also, to risk one’s own job security in opposing injustice. But time is of the essence. I urge you, please form a bi-partisan House caucus that states publicly its joint and decisive opposition to these “leaders” who apparently failed Modern History 101 and are presently undermining the Mueller investigation.

I rely on your bravery. Please reply to me simply, honorably, straight-forwardly: “Yes, I will call out by name the weak-in-their-political-and-moral-knees quislings in the Republican Party who, by obstructing the FBI, unwittingly and actively collude with our known enemy, Vladimir Putin’s Moscow fascists.”

Respectfully yours with thanks,

Richard Hobcraft Allan III, Crozet

Gentlemen, a little history not too long ago. Do your remember when…
The Washington Times - Tuesday, July 12, 2016
“The State Department paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax payers grants to an Israeli group that used the money to build a campaign to oust Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in last year’s Israeli parliamentary elections, a congressional investigation concluded Tuesday.
Some $350,000 was sent to OneVoice, ostensibly to support the group’s efforts to back Israeli-Palestinian peace settlement negotiations. But OneVoice used the money to build a voter database, train activists and hire a political consulting firm with ties to President Obama’s campaign — all of which set the stage for an anti-Netanyahu campaign, the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations said in a bipartisan staff report." ...and yes that was a bipartisan report.
But the US doesn’t try to influence other countries election…right. Of course the Russian tried to influence the elect.
Undermining the Mueller investigation please. In published reports and from their own records, the FBI has failed this country to stand by their oath. Everyone is equal under that law right?
Time to face the music, Trump is president because of eight years of Obama, not the Russians.

A quick perusal of Mr. Allan's voting record, and his record of political donations shows that he is not what he portrays himself to be. He makes himself and his father out to be great patriotic Republicans, but in fact he is nothing more than a run of the mill partisan Democrat defending the indefensible actions of other partisan Democrats who continue to attempt to destroy our President over a made up witch hunt. How about we look into the use of Federal law enforcement, the IRs, and the Intelligence Community by Obama and his administration against their political opponents? That is where the real story lies, and where the investigations should be focused.

The DOJ and the FBI was highly politicized under Chairman Obama. The fix was in for Hillary Clinton. The Democrats fixed there own primary to make Clinton the nominee, it's a fact. Obama had his DOJ (Loretta Lynch) and his other subordinates try to rig the national election for her but it didn't work. They never thought they'd have to campaign in the likes of PA, Wisconsin and Michigan and they lost. This is going to be the biggest scandal in our Nation's history. The facts will come out.
I am an American Patriot. I served and took up arms for my country for 20 years as well. I stood watch over the likes of the Communist and the Islamist radicals. I call it as I see it. This was always the plan to try to make Trump delegitimate if he beat Hillary Clinton. The fix was in but the fix had a wrench in it and Trump won. The GOP is standing up for the duly elected President while the Dems and the Deep State are trying a soft Coup to remove him from office. Mueller is investigating the wrong people. He should be investigating the likes of Obama, Clinton, Holder, Lynch, Wasserman Schultz and many others. These are facts. Open your eyes to what REALLY is going on.

Sorry, Joe, but you are WAY off base. Thee was no "fix" for Hillary Clinton, and the emails stolen and disseminated by Russian intelligence agencies proved it. Nor did Obama try to "rig" the national election, but Republicans, with their voter suppression efforts and their reliance on Fox fake news -- where it appears you get much of your "information" -- sure tried to rig the election. If you are truly a "patriot" -- and that's highly debatable given your comments -- then you will support the Mueller investigation - which has already produced indictments of Trump aides - and demand that Tom Garrett wake up to the fact that there's an inept, racist, coward in the Oval Office and that Garrett demand that Mueller's investigation of Agent Orange proceed uninhibited by those who want to cover up how deeply tied to Russia Trump really is.

But you don't want to know the truth, do you? It may be time for you to buy yourself a new flag.

No fix? Ask Bernie Sanders and Martin O'Malley if there wasn't a fix. Debbie Wasserman Schultz didn't even sneeze unless she had Hillary's approval. How dare you question my patriotism. You are probably one of those that support kneeling NFL players and the cop hating Colin Kaepernick. I bet you wear socks that depict cops as pigs. Fox News fake? Typical left wing loon accusation. Continue getting your news from the likes of Don Lemon, Chris Mathews and Brian Ross "the fake investigative reporter". You will continue to dilute your mind. The scandal is coming. Be ready to be disappointed.

BTW, you may want to think of a new handle. More like "Socialist". Next time I'm in Warrenton I'll be looking for the person with the pink hat with cat ears. It will most likely be you. Are you nasty too?

Thank you Mr. Allan for putting to words what so many of us feel. Thank you and your father for your courageous service. And thank you for calling on Mr. Garrett to take a stand for what is right.

His father was courageous and we owe him a debt. But the author has done nothing for this country

Beautiful letter, Richard.

But don't hold your breath. Tom Garrett is no "patriot," and he does not have the personal bravery or the honor to uphold his oath to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic."

That's a very sad commentary, but it encapsulates the 'values' of the vast majority of Republicans. As the story goes, a woman asked Ben Franklin at the close of the Constitutinoal Convention,

"What kind of government have you given us, Dr. Franklin?"

And Franklin responded,

A Republic, madam, if you can keep it."

But don't expect any help from Tom Garrett or his Republican brethren.
