I write to you in a spirit of respectful and sincere concern. My father and his Rotarians were the citizen-nucleus in Jackson County, Mississippi, who urged a young Trent Lott, and then drafted him with financial support, to run as a Republican for Congress. In the 1960's Rep. Lott lead the Southern exodus from the Democratic Party that underlies today’s GOP majority. Republican roots run deep in my family.
Today millions of Americans are deeply concerned about the multiple overt and covert attacks on our country by Russian oligarchs, neo-fascists and their KGB chief. We trust in our nation’s leaders to stand against this attack by a dictatorship that has been our primary adversary for much of a century. You are such a leader, sworn to protect us from enemies foreign and domestic.
According to news reports supported by ample evidence, some of today’s Republicans in Congress are not living up to those oaths. Instead, through public comment and congressional action they are undermining the duly authorized investigation into Russian subversions of our democracy, and hence public confidence therein. Regrettably, they have become unwitting agents of Putin’s determination to weaken and corrupt our country.
Why would the political party I was raised in, the one that stood boldly with President Reagan against a Russian “evil empire,” fail in its duty to do the same now? Your Republican leadership has prematurely demanded vital FBI documents and witness reports, thus hobbling, perhaps even scuttling, a crucial on-going investigation. I am sure you are not one of those Republicans calling for an “investigation of the investigators?”
In February 1945 my father led his Marines of D Company, 28th Regiment, 5th USMC Division onto Iwo Jima beach’s lethal firestorm. Dad commanded the attack company whose patrol first secured the summit of Mt. Surabachi. (The world-famous flag was safe to raise three days later.) And in fall of 1968 I served with HQ, Third Infantry Division on the West German/ Czechoslovakian border, ready to repel Russians if they invaded NATO. My father and I stood by our oaths to protect America.
I ask that you do the same, decisively and at once. By this I mean: Right now. As a retired Army artillery officer you know it takes fire in your belly to be a patriot, idealism and courage to recognize subversion. It requires guts, also, to risk one’s own job security in opposing injustice. But time is of the essence. I urge you, please form a bi-partisan House caucus that states publicly its joint and decisive opposition to these “leaders” who apparently failed Modern History 101 and are presently undermining the Mueller investigation.
I rely on your bravery. Please reply to me simply, honorably, straight-forwardly: “Yes, I will call out by name the weak-in-their-political-and-moral-knees quislings in the Republican Party who, by obstructing the FBI, unwittingly and actively collude with our known enemy, Vladimir Putin’s Moscow fascists.”
Respectfully yours with thanks,
Richard Hobcraft Allan III, Crozet
