The Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office and Fauquier County school division are investigating a report that a student had a gun in his possession at Fauquier High School Thursday.
The report came to the authorities’ attention via a post on a local “yard sale site” and was not reported to the sheriff’s office or the school division by the person who made the post, according to Sgt. James Hartman, spokesman for the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office.
“At this time, FCSO is working to verify the identity of the person making these statements and to prove the veracity of the information contained in the post,” Hartman said in a press release.
Fauquier County schools issued a statement to parents tonight, Thursday, Oct. 4, to inform them of the investigation.
It states: “At approximately 6:30 p.m., a post made on a Facebook page was brought to the attention of FCPS administration. The post alleged that there was a gun spotted at Fauquier High School. The Sheriff's Office was contacted as soon as FCPS was made aware of the post. Law enforcement is actively investigating the incident. There is no evidence that substantiates the information contained in the post at this time. Additional police presence will be at Fauquier High School tomorrow.”
Hartman noted that such information “should be immediately reported to law enforcement and not on a local yard sale site,” he said in the press release.
The sheriff’s office will provide additional security at Fauquier High School on Friday.
