Lifetime Warrenton resident Mattie May Wines celebrated her 85th birthday Saturday with a drive-thru party at Warrenton United Methodist Church -- where she has been attending services for more than 80 years. Until recently of course, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The birthday girl remembered another time when she was honored. On May 22,  1952 -- 68 years ago, almost to the day -- a 16-year-old Mattie May was crowned Miss Fauquier at Warrenton High School. "I received two dozen red roses and a Bulova watch," she said. "My dress was beautiful. It cost $116. My shoes were lace and they cost $16.95."

Friends and family drove by, honked and even sang happy birthday. At 2:30 p.m. Chris and Mike Shankle did a flyover in a bright yellow biplane.
