Kleinfelter pitches Marshall past Auburn in middle school softball finale

5/29/2008

An 8-0 win or a 10-0 win?A Fauquier County championship or a co-championship?Both were up for debate, but those details didn’t matter much. Either way, the Marshall Middle School Wolves got to dump a Gatorade bucket of ice on their coach Thursday and celebrate a season-ending victory over the Auburn Middle School softball team. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Fortney wheeling and dealing in the discus

5/27/2008

If Kyle Fortney's theory for a successful discus throw is sound, the Fauquier High track and field team may want to pamper him a bit this week as the Group AAA state meet approaches."Throwing is all about what kind of mood you’re in," Fortney said Friday during the Northwest Region meet at the University of Virginia's Lannigan Field. "It’s just a mindset....I’m in that zone." | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Liberty's Coaxum hurdles towards states

5/27/2008

One problem with entering multiple events at a track and field meet is the odds for disappointment increase. So as a four-event athlete, it was almost inevitable Liberty's Rachel Coaxum would leave the the University of Virginia's Lannigan Field feeling she could have fared better in the Group AAA Northwest Region meet Friday."It kind of stinks that you come here in all these events and you know you can do well...and I didn’t PR [personal record] in anything today," Coaxum said. “Overall, I’m kind of disappointed. I really am." | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Rackets packed for states

5/27/2008

All season long, two words have resonated when Jan Ashby has spoken of this spring's Fauquier Falcon tennis unit: Stay focused.Ashby and fellow coach Jordon Walker both have lauded the 2008 edition's skill, athletic ability and work ethic. They felt a berth in this spring's Group AAA state tennis tournament was within reach if the Falcons could concentrate on that goal. They did not need to worry, except it was the ability to regain focus last Thursday when the Falcons qualified for the second state playoff berth in the last three years. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Jimmy's back in town

5/27/2008

One wasn’t sure what to expect from Stu Pierson’s little pickup soccer team. The local coach had assembled the best men's unit he could recruit from the immediate area. Playing under the name Fauquier United, they included former college players, some from Latin America, and members of Pierson's cohesive club team that operated under the name Real Montana Azul. Pierson also had Fauquier High boys soccer coach Phil Roper, an all-state player “in the day” at FHS. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Morse twins shine at regions, but wonder what might have been

5/27/2008

There might be a pair of region champions in the Morse household right now if the Liberty track and field team hadn't moved from Group AA to AAA this season. As it is, though, senior Cameron Morse and twin sister Chloe are happy to have combined for six top-eight finishes at Friday's AAA Northwest Region meet at University of Virginia's Lannigan Field. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Liberty's Noe clears height to make states; Costello also flies high

5/27/2008

Pole vault was a fickle event for Lindsey Noe at Friday's AAA Northwest Region meet. One minute she faced elimination, needing to clear her third and final vault at 9 feet, 6 inches to secure a state berth; the next minute she breezed over a 10-foot bar to match her Liberty track and field record.Noe's timely vault at 9-6 and subsequent personal-best vault of 10-0 led to a fourth-place finish at the University of Virginia's Lannigan Field. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

On a busy Monday, eight Liberty High seniors were let out of class for a visit to the library. Hard work pays off for four college-bound FHS wrestlers

5/22/2008

Was Battlefield worried? Oh yeah.

5/22/2008

Franco Buzzalino feared for his Battlefield Bobcats if this game were to extend into overtime. After they had squandered scoring opportunities in the second half and relinquished a two-goal lead, the Bobcat standout thought it possible that Fauquier would pull out an upset win if given extra time. So, to avoid that fate, Buzzalino ended the game in regulation, scoring the decisive goal with 25.7 seconds remaining and giving Battlefield a 3-2 victory in the quarterfinals of the Cedar Run District boys soccer tournament quarterfinals. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Fauquier's Loba and Helsel are a formidable distance duo at districts

5/20/2008

Fauquier High's Grace Loba was more chauffeur and cheerleader than distance runner at the Cedar Run District outdoor track and field championships, last Tuesday and Wednesday at Battlefield High in Haymarket. The FHS senior had already run state- and national-qualifying times in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs during the regular season, so her district goals were modest. Loba wanted to set a pace for Emma Helsel in the 1,600 so the FHS freshman could qualify for nationals, she wanted to cheer on her Falcon teammates and she wanted to relax. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

LHS, FHS vaulters dominate their event at district meet

5/20/2008

There's no reason to venture outside Fauquier County to watch the best pole vaulting in the Cedar Run District. Liberty and Fauquier High vaulters seem to be setting the bar for the rest of the district, a notion reinforced Tuesday, the first day of the Cedar Run District track and field championships at Battlefield High School in Haymarket. Liberty won both the boys and girls pole vault, while seven other county athletes placed top-eight in the event. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

5/20/2008

Twenty-one innings. Two hundred and fifty-six pitches. And, after several hours, another state title for the Highland softball team. The sixth-seeded Hawks (16-8) battled through an epic Saturday in Richmond — beating No. 1 Greenbrier (27-2 overall) 2-0 in 12 innings for the VIS Division II state championship, just shortly after a 4-3 nine-inning semifinal victory over No. 2 Brunswick Academy. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Hawks' loss is sixth straight in state lacrosse final

5/20/2008

Fauquier boys lacrosse upset in semifinals by OP, 6-5

5/20/2008

Goalie Thorne Watkins and his defensemen prevented nearly everything that threatened to end Fauquier High's lacrosse season. All they lacked was a vaccination for inept offense. That lone shortcoming led to the Falcons' demise in the Cedar Run District tournament as No. 4 seed Osbourn Park upset No. 2 Fauquier, 6-5, in Thursday's semifinals played in Purcellville. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Lethal Bobcats eliminate Fauquier, 3-0, in playoffs

5/20/2008

Manufactured runs by Battlefield in the first two innings, coupled with a near-perfect performance from senior pitcher Megan Sutphin, ended Fauquier’s season and pitcher Nikki Roy’s career as the Bobcats won 3-0 at home in Haymarket in the first round of the Cedar Run District tournament. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Falcons battle Battlefield, but fall 2-0

5/20/2008

Hawks send Seahorses galloping home, 14-2

5/15/2008

Late in the third quarter of Tuesday's state boys lacrosse quarterfinal, the Christchurch School players looked worn out as they jogged or walked off the field. In contrast, Highland's players sprinted up and down with the same enthusiasm shown in the opening minutes. That, in short, told the story of this lopsided game, as the energetic Hawks brought an intensity the Seahorses could not match and moved a step closer to their ultimate goal with an emphatic 14-2 victory. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Falcons to Eagles: Not this time

5/15/2008

Earlier this season, the Liberty High boys soccer team pulled off an rare victory over their county rival, downing Fauquier 2-0. It was the Eagles' only win this year. That loss — including the front page headline in the Fauquier Times-Democrat, “We just whooped Fauquier” —served as fuel for an FHS squad determined to get revenge on Senior Night Wednesday in Warrenton.Goals by Fauquier's Ryan Wagoner roughly five minutes into the second half, and then Ian Burns about 15 minutes later, went unanswered by the visiting Eagles, who lost 3-1. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Fauquier shocks Liberty in girls lacrosse playoffs, 10-7

5/13/2008

Stranger things have happened.Losing was the last thing on the minds of the No. 3-seeded Liberty Eagles girls lacrosse team as they faced No. 5 Fauquier last Thursday in the Cedar Run District quarterfinals. After defeating the Falcons in both regular season matchups, the 10-7 loss in Bealeton came as a stunner to the Eagles (9-4) and their eight seniors. For Fauquier (3-7), it made their season. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Vikings win district regular season crown, dumping FHS, 11-5,

5/13/2008

Chris Roos called it a five-minute sprint to get ready for the Fauquier Falcons. Teammate Chris Rabung called it a warm up to loosen the legs of his Loudoun Valley Vikings. In reality, it was much more significant. It was the crucial closing moments of a playoff game against Osbourn Park, one postponed due to rain with five minutes remaining Thursday and completed Saturday. But Roos and Rabung could use such levity in their descriptions because the Vikings won that game on Liberty's Kip Hull Field and later in the night beat Fauquier, 11-5. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

A Perfect Fitt: Tutt, Pitt excel in 2008

5/13/2008

It would be hard to classify one of the best seasons in the University of Pittsburgh's softball history as a disappointment. It would be harder still to label former Highland School star Reba Tutt's freshman year as anything short of sensational. The Panthers' season came to an end on May 8, when they lost a heartbreaking 4-3, 11-inning game to DePaul in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Highland survives NSA

5/13/2008

On the phone, as his team made the long bus ride back from Suffolk, VA., Highland softball coach Donald O'Meara proclaimed facetiously, "I'm fine now, but I was in cardiac arrest about 30 minutes ago!" The reason for O'Meara's angst was his team's heart-stopping VIS quarterfinal game at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy. The Hawks held on for a 2-1 victory, but it turned into a white knuckle affair. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Eagles shut down by giddy Devilettes, 6-0

5/8/2008

Charlie Padgett did not mind that Culpeper's softball team reveled in its Senior Day festivities. The fact that the merriment came at Liberty's expense irked the coach a bit, though.   Culpeper rolled to a 6-0 win over LHS on Tuesday — continuing a miserable stretch of games where the Eagles (4-12 overall, 2-10 district) have gone 0-4 and been outscored 48-0. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

5/6/2008

With a seven-goal lead at halftime of their 12-2 victory over Culpeper Monday, the Fauquier Falcons knew it'd be only 24 minutes until they became Cedar Run District champions. The also knew the wait would be much longer to see if they'd have to share that title. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Fauquier's McCartin accepts football walk-on offer at UVa.

5/6/2008

Suffering a torn ACL last football season didn’t end Kyle McCartin’s scholarship quest, but it made it a more laborious pursuit. In lieu of immediate athletic scholarship offers, the Fauquier High senior decided in early April to attend the University of Virginia next fall and join the football team as an invited walk on. Once recruited by a handful of Division I programs, McCartin will now try to earn a scholarship by climbing up the quarterback depth chart in the coming years. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

This time LHS girls dominate FHS in tennis, 9-0

5/6/2008

As celebrations go, this was pretty tame.  It had the kind of hushed tone found amid church pews mid-sermon, altogether appropriate considering this celebration happened mid-match Wednesday in the Liberty Eagles' 9-0 sweep of Fauquier High. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Battlefield hits 8 home runs, beats Liberty 30-2

5/6/2008

It’s technically possible for a baseball game to never end.Baseball has no time limits, meaning one team could keep on hitting if the other team can’t get them out.Battlefield put that mind-blowing time continuum to the test in Friday’s game against Liberty. The Bobcats batted 19 men and scored 15 runs in the first inning alone. They opened up a 15-0 lead and coasted to a 30-2 victory in a game that did eventually come to an end. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Despite 5-1 loss, Liberty girls improve as game goes on

5/6/2008

Liberty coach Bob Ruhland could not be disappointed at losing to Battlefield Friday night in Haymarket. His girls managed to hold the Cedar Run District's top team to only one second-half goal with underclassmen doing the bulk of the defensive work for him in the backfield. “I don’t ever complain [about] losing to talent,” he said. The Bobcats (11-1) unleashed a fury of goals right out from the gate as part of a 5-1 victory over the Eagles (2-8-1). | 0 comments - ›› more ...

FHS boys tennis (14-0) acing all comers

5/6/2008

The No. 1 team in the Cedar Run District boys tennis standings faced a test Monday. Here was first-place Fauquier, unbeaten this spring, headed to No. 2 Loudoun Valley for a late-season battle. Loudoun Valley had lost twice in league play, so the Falcons already had clinched the district's crown before entering the regular-season finale. The big question was whether the home-court advantage would permit the Vikings to spoil Fauquier's unblemished record. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Falcons threaten Battlefield at times, but fall, 7-1

5/2/2008

Had there been a sand wedge hanging on the dugout bat rack, Battlefield catcher Courtney Liddle may have hit three home runs in the Bobcats' 7-1 victory over the Fauquier softball team Tuesday. Sans sand wedge, Liddle had to settle for two home runs and four RBIs because the big barrel of her aluminum bat was of little use in her final at bat. | 0 comments - ›› more ...
