A 30-year-old Warrenton man stands charged in a purse snatching Friday after two citizens confronted the suspect, who was hiding in a shed, and held him until police arrived.

Victor L. Thompson, of the 100 block of Sterling Court in Warrenton, faces a charge of strong armed robbery.

About 9:45 a.m., a 49-year-old Culpeper woman had just left a business and was in the 600 block of South Main Street, when Thompson allegedly grabbed her purse. The two struggled briefly over the purse and the woman was thrown to the ground. Thompson allegedly took the purse and fled on foot.

A postal worker and another man confronted Thompson in a shed where he hid. Police soon arrived and took Thompson into custody.

Several citizens witnessed portions of the crime and called police with a description of the alleged robber.

The victim was treated at the scene by paramedics for an abrasion to a knee.

Det. Brittany Jenkins handled the investigation, with assistance from patrol officers.

“The citizens are to be commended for getting involved in this crime,” said Police Chief Chris Jenkins. “We can’t thank them enough.”
