Warrenton Town Council member Powell Duggan formally announced his candidacy for mayor today in a joint release with fellow council members David Norden and Roger Martella.
Duggan, who has represented Ward 1 since 2008, will run for mayor of Warrenton. George Fitch, the current mayor, has announced he will not seek re-election.
Norden and Martella, who hold "at-large" seats on the town council, will run to retain their seats.
Together, they'll run a joint campaign with the theme "Small Town, Big Life." The three incumbents will run on a platform of "protecting Warrenton's small-town quality of life, character and low taxes,w hile providing big opportunities for recreation and entertainment, economic development and business growth," according to a campaign release.
"Warrenton is a special place and I look forward to the opportunity to continue working with David and Roger to preserve its uniqueness and to make it an even better place to live and work," Duggan said.
Together, the three pledged to continue expanding the town's recreational opportunities, promote business development, improve traffic safety, safeguard the town's water and sewer infrastructure, keep property taxes low and support Old Town businesses.
So far, the three incumbents have only one declared rival: Sunny Reynolds, who announced her candidacy last year
under the aegis of the recently-formed Fauquier Citizens for Balanced Growth Political Action Committee.
Candidates must file for candidacy before March 4. The town council election will be May 6.
