Taylor Middle School students in Selena Dickey’s history classes received a special gift earlier this month from an active duty Air Force member currently serving in Afghanistan.
Lieutenant Colonel Scott Walker sent a letter, a certificate and an American flag that he said had been “flown over the skies of Afghanistan” – literally, as it turns out. LT COL Walker enclosed a photo of the flag actually being flown “over” the air base – in the cockpit of an F-16.
In November, in celebration of Veteran’s Day, Ms. Dickey’s history students wrote and sent more than
80 thank you cards to service men and women. Over the past several months the students have received emails, letters, cards and small gifts from the appreciative men and women, and then the flag arrived.
“We are very proud of our new flag and so we flew it ‘over’ Taylor,” said Ms. Dickey, “but on a flagpole
this time.” The flag was raised over Taylor on Friday, April 11. Ultimately the flag will be put on display at the school, along with other tokens sent from the military personnel, for future generations of Taylor Tigers to see.
