It may have been the worst Homecoming loss in Liberty High football history, and it came in the 2012 Evergreen District opener.

Warren County erased a decade of futility against Liberty with a decisive 41-7 victory Friday in Bealeton. The undefeated Wildcats (6-0) beat the Eagles for the first time since 1999 and bolted to the top of the Evergreen District alongside Fauquier at 1-0. FHS and Warren County will meet next Friday in Front Royal, while the Eagles (3-3, 0-1) look to regroup at Kettle Run (6-0, 0-0).

It was only moments into the game that Liberty fell behind Warren County, and it got worse. The Eagles trailed 21-0 after the first quarter and 41-0 at halftime.

“They got 21 points in six minutes. It shocked the kids and they did not wake up until halftime,” Liberty coach Sean Finnerty said of a nightmarish opening quarter in which the Eagles lost three consecutive fumbles, all in the crucial opening minutes.

Two of the fumbles were committed by Jaquan Sinclair, and one by Aristotle Howard.

All three led to Warren County touchdowns. In fact, Jeff Budwash turned Sinclair’s first fumble into a 62-yard return for a touchdown.

Warren County also got two rushing touchdowns from Tim Green, and two touchdown passes from star quarterback Tyler Post, who connected with Matt Nicholson and Chris Larsen.

It took a 6-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Longerbeam to Garrett Utterback with 12 seconds left in the fourth quarter to avoid the shutout.

“I still love my team. I stand by my boys,” said Liberty defensive end Wyatt Teller.
