Shorthanded, inexperienced Liberty falls to Sherando boys tennis team

Graduation stripped the Liberty boys tennis team of almost all its experienced players following last season.

The flu compounded that problem Monday, resulting in a 9-0 loss to the Sherando Warriors on the road in Winchester.

Playing without No. 1 singles player Kamran Pirasteh and No. 6 singles player Shaun Davis, the Cougars had to forfeit three matches, including the No. 1 doubles competition. As a result, Liberty’s record fell to 0-3.

“We’re young,” Eagles coach Kyle McGlotten said. “We have to gain experience. We have a number of people who haven’t played tennis before. That always takes time.”

Liberty does not have a senior on its roster and sophomore Cesar Subervi is the only returning starter from a team that lost four seniors following last season, including multi-year No. 1 singles player Josh Rinker.

Current No. 4 singles player sophomore Christian Young was on the varsity roster last season, but did not start, while Kamran, a junior, joined Liberty this season.

“We’re blessed with Kamran, who has played tennis” for years, McGlotten said. “It’s just learning the game [for most everyone else]. It’s a process, and doing it at a varsity level, you have to have a fast learning experience.”

“If we continue to improve I believe we can be competitive in certain areas,” McGlotten said. “I’m not sure the strength of the district, but Kettle Run’s very strong, and Fauquier is always strong. It depends on how quickly we learn. I’ve definitely seen a couple good things with our doubles.”

Kettle Run beat Sherando twice earlier this season, while Liberty struggled against the Warriors on Monday. In singles action, No. 2 Zach Frack lost 10-5, while No. 3 Subervi lost 10-6, No. 4 Christian Young lost 10-0 and No. 5 Joey Craft lost 10-0.

In doubles play, Frack and Craft lost 10-1 at No. 2, while Subervi and Young lost 10-4 at No. 3.

“Sherando, they’re a good team,” McGlotten said. “They make the regionals every year.”
