Sheriff’s deputy in every school

Monday, Dec. 17 | By Alisa Booze Troetschel

Beginning this morning, and continuing until the Christmas break begins at the end of the day Thursday, there will be a sheriff's deputy stationed at each of Fauquier County's 20 schools.

Their presence serves three objectives, said Dr. Jonathan Lewis, school superintendent. In response to the horrific shootings last Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newport, Conn., the deputies create a level of security for parents and school staff.

In case of the rare event of a copycat crime occurring, the deputies are on site and available for defense.

The protection of the sheriff's deputies provide time for school staff to consider the adequacy of current emergency procedures. They will be reflecting on these over the Christmas break.
