The Wakefield Owls placed third Friday in the girls race of the VISAA Division II state cross country meet at Woodberry Forest thanks to a third-place finish individually by Alexis Russell.

In a 21-team girls field, Wakefield finished with a score of 165 behind Peninsula Catholic (76) and Walsingham Academy (98). The Wakefield boys placed 17th (436) behind winner Veritas Christian, while Highland finished 25th (581) in the 29-team field. The Highland girls did not field a full team.

Russell led the Owls by finishing in 20 minutes, 48.57 seconds, while Veritas Christian’s Morgan Lewis won in 20:18.13. Also for the Wakefield girls, Emily Granruth finished 14th (21:56.40), Kathryn Anderson placed 15th (21:57.16), Shelby Sipes took 73rd (24:33.63) and Danielle Russell finished 93rd (25:14.33).

For the Highland girls, Olivia Saunders placed 36th (23:11.43), Kristina Zervoudis took 82nd (24:52.31) and Mary Catherine Treuting finished 94th (25:15.01).

Ethan Mahoney led the Wakefield boys with a 31st-place finish (19:08.99) behind winner Philip Harpen of Peninsula Catholic (16:52.54). Also for the Owls, Ben Weimer took 44th (19:22.56), James Wroe finished 107th (21:00.11), Daniel Lizarrage placed 117th (21:13.88), Joshua Mohney took 199th (22:57.48) and Richard Holtslander finished 207th (23:17.79).

For Highland, Jack Slack placed 48th (19:29.88), William Treuting took 81st (20:13.35), William Bowman finished 159th (22:07.16), Gordon Wallace placed 193rd (22:50.95) and Johnny Bounds took 195th (22:52.54).
