Virginia state police found a handgun inside Corey Chamberlain's vehicle, according to a release from investigators.
"A search of the pursuit vehicle, the Mitsubishi Eclipse, was conducted Tuesday by the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Culpeper Field Office," said state police spokeswoman Deborah Cox. "A handgun was recovered from inside the wrecked vehicle."
Cox referred to the incident as a "shooting" in the release. On Monday night, Chamberlain, 24, died after leading Fauquier sheriff's deputies on a chase from Dumfries Road to Independence Avenue in Bealeton.
Chamberlain was thrown free of the Mitsubishi Eclipse he drove on Monday and was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he died from his injuries. Hospital staff informed investigators that Chamberlain had an apparent gunshot wound.
First Sgt. Les Tyler, spokesman of the Culpeper Field Office, would not comment Wednesday when asked how Chamberlain was shot.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting remains ongoing. Anyone with information about the crash or Mr. Chamberlain is encouraged to call the State Police at (540) 829-7400.
