Oct. 19 high school sports roundup

The Wakefield Owls beat the Fredericksburg Christian field hockey team, 1-0, Friday, on the road only seven days after losing to that same opponent.

The Owls lost to Fredericksburg, 1-0, at home in The Plain on Oct. 12, but got their revenge Friday to improve their record to 4-7-2.

Brianna Hutchison scored the winning goal at the 12 minute, 24 second mark in the first half with an assist by Annette Lee. Wakefield goalie Tish Johnston had three saves, while Alex Diaz-Aleman finished with seven defensive saves and EricaJoy Oliverio had three.

Liberty boys, Fauquier girls win in cross country

The Liberty Eagles used the top-two individual placers to win the boys team race of a triangular cross country meet Wednesday in Bealeton.

The Eagles won with a score of 38, while the Fauquier Falcons and Kettle Run Cougars tied for second with 45 points. Even though Liberty and Kettle Run combined to have all of the top-six placers, Fauquier swept the No. 7-11 spots to avoid finishing third.

In the girls race, Fauquier won with a score of 21, while Kettle Run placed second (64 points) and Liberty failed to log a score.

For the Liberty boys, Danny Collins finished first, Charles Walker placed second, Adam Walker took fifth, Michael Fairfax finished 14th and Chase Kopp placed 16th. For the Kettle Run boys, Stephen Rhodes took third, Ryan Connery finished fourth, Marshall Adzima took sixth, Jed Dalton finished 13th and Daniel LeFever placed 19th.

For the Fauquier boys, Connor Dorman took seventh, Andy Page finished eighth, Curtis Grady placed ninth, Colin Cummins took 10th and Raul Chavez finished 11th, while the Fauquier girls were led by a runner-up finish from Samantha Bunn. Helena Wojcik added a third-place finish, while Claire Burke took fourth, Josie Hopkins finished fifth and Shayne Halligan placed seventh.

Liberty’s Taylor Brown won the girls race, while Kettle Run’s Rachel Wingo took sixth, Julia Roda finished eighth, Sara Lewis placed 15th, Becca Bongiovi took 17th and Tori Spratt finished 18th.

Those three Fauquier County team will again face off Tuesday in the Evergreen District championship meet at Brentsville’s course in Nokesville, beginning at 3:45 p.m.
