A day of reflection, celebration and prayer filled the packed Highland School auditorium at Mount Zion Baptist Church’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day event.
Multiple generations of people from Fauquier and surrounding communities gathered together on the holiday for performances, poetry, community service awards and keynote speaker, the Rev. Jeffrey Johnson Sr., who serves as Mount Calvary Baptists Church’s pastor in Fairfax and is a Christian radio broadcaster.
“We gather here today on the birthday of someone who decided to stand up for those who have been looked over,” said Johnson in his speech. “We are known throughout the world as individuals who know how to demand their rights, and to do so according to the work of god.”
Johnson reflected on the trial and tribulations in American History that we as a community have overcome. He outlined things that are still challenging America today, and what we should do to change our future for the better.
