For the first time in program history, the Kettle Run softball team swept its season series against the Fauquier Falcons.

The Cougars beat Fauquier, 9-5, Wednesday on the road in Warrenton with 11 hits to improve their record to 13-3. The Falcons, meanwhile, fell to 14-5 with their third consecutive loss.

Previously, in April, Kettle Run defeated Fauquier, 4-3.

On Wednesday, the Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Kaitlin Munda led off with a double and Jasmine Webster added an infield single. Shelby Stegmaier then hit a one-out, two-RBI double.

In the fourth inning, Kettle Run expanded its lead to 6-0 with Debbie Stuart (double), Stegamier (hit-by-pitch) and Forrest Poland (single) loading the bases. Carissa Brizzi followed with a three-RBI triple and then scored on a wild pitch.

Stegmaier finished with two RBIs, a double and a run on 3-for-3 hitting, while Webster had two runs and an RBI on 3-for-4 hitting, and Munda went 2-for-3 with three runs and two doubles. Stuart went 1-for-3 and Brizzi went 1-for-4.

Munda also got the win by allowing five runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out eight over seven innings. Fauquier's Ashtyn Foddrell hit a solo home run and finished 1-for-3, while Angelle Marshall went 1-for-2 and Leann Brown went 1-for-4 with an RBI triple. Jessie Goodwin and Robyn Fletcher each went 1-for-3 with a run.

The Falcons' Tess Miller took the loss after allowing nine runs (seven earned) on nine hits and a walk while striking out four over 4 2/3 innings.

Highland golf fourth at state

On Monday, the Highland Hawks finished tied for fourth at the VISAA Division II state golf tournament at Manor Golf Club in Farmville with a score of 342.

Jacob Gravett shot an 82 while Seth Kott shot 85, Brett Schmeider shot 86, Grant Salley shot 89, Henry Pendleton shot 91 and Andrew Norman shot 118.

The Hawks finished the season with a 12-4 record after winning the Delaney Athletic Conference championship.
