Kettle Run boys tennis 5, Culpeper 1
It took two days, but the Kettle Run Cougars defeated Culpeper, 5-1, Wednesday during the semifinals of the Conference 27 boys tennis tournament at home in Nokesville.
The Cougars, who have won four consecutive matches to give them a 10-4 record, advanced to play James Monroe in the tournament final Monday. Kettle Run began the conference semifinals Tuesday, but rain suspended the dual match until Wednesday.
“We didn’t need to play doubles, which is always a good thing,” Kettle Run coach Stephen Sviatko said of clinching the win during singles action. “I was very pleased with how we played.”
The tournament format for singles and doubles matches is best-of-three sets rather than first-to-win 10 games, which was the regular season format.
“I really think that this could be a good thing for my team because I feel we can play the long matches,” Sviatko said.
Against James Monroe, Kettle Run No. 2 Andrew Rainger won, 6-0, 6-1, while No. 3 Ryan Powell won, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, No. 4 Justin Smith won, 6-1, 6-0, No. 5 Luke Schwenke won, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5, and K.P. Deliee won, 6-1, 6-3.
