The Highland Hawks won the Delaney Athletic Conference golf tournament championship Monday at Shenandoah Valley Golf Course.

The Hawks finished with a score of 118 to beat runner-up Tandem Friends by 16 strokes (134) and improve their record to 12-3.

Highland senior Brett Schmeider was named tournament MVP after shooting a 38, while sophomore Jacob Gravett shot a 39, senior Henry Pendleton shot a 41, senior Grant Salley shot a 41 and junior Seth Kott added a 45.

Ranked No. 5 in the latest VISAA Division II poll, the Hawks will next play May 19 in the state tournament after they won the DAC regular season with a 5-0 record.

Kettle Run softball 16, Spotsylvania 5

The Kettle Run Cougars solidified their place in the Conference 27 softball standings Monday by dominating Spotsylvania, 16-5, on the road.

The Cougars improved their record to 5-1 in the conference (11-3 overall) and maintained their second-place position, while third-place Spotsylvania fell to 4-3 (8-4).

Kettle Run took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, a 6-1 advantage in the third and a 14-5 lead by the end of the fifth.

Shelby Stegmaier hit a home run to lead the Cougars with four RBIs and two runs on 2-for-5 hitting, while Kaitlin Munda went 4-for-5 with three runs and an RBI. Debbie Stuart added three runs, two RBIs and a double on 2-for-5 hitting, while Claire Miclat went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Munda pitched six innings for the win, allowing four earned runs on seven hits while striking out nine.

Previously, on Friday, Munda threw a complete-game shutout to help the Cougars hand Brentsville (6-1) its first conference loss. Kettle Run won, 1-0, with Munda striking out six and allowing four hits over seven innings.

In the top of the fifth inning, Jasmine Webster hit a single to right field and advanced to third on an error. Olivia Murray followed with an RBI single to left field.

Webster, Murray and Stuart each went 1-for-2.

Fauquier softball 12, James Wood 1

The Fauquier Falcons won their seventh consecutive softball game Monday by beating James Wood, 12-1, at home in Warrenton.

The Falcons (12-3) amassed 11 hits and took an 11-0 lead by the end of the third inning en route to winning via mercy rule in five innings. Robyn Fletcher hits a home run and had three RBIs, two runs and a stolen base on 3-for-4 hitting, while Ashtyn Foddrell went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs and a double. Going 2-fo-3 were Leann Brown (two runs) and Tess Miller (one run, one RBI, one stolen base).

For James Wood, Kierstyn Peacoe hit a solo home run and a triple.

Fauquier pitcher Apryl Nalls allowed only one other hit and walked one while striking out two.

DAC tournament finals

In the Delaney Athletic Conference tournament finals Friday, Highland beat the Fredericksburg Christian softball team, 6-1, lost to the Foxcroft girls lacrosse team, 20-5, and lost to the Trinity Christian boys lacrosse team, 18-5.

In softball, Julia Granato, Ali Granato and Sarah Frye went 2-for-3, while pitcher Jordanna Shorts struck out 10 in a one-hit effort.

In girls lacrosse, Jessica Crew had three goals, while Emma Walsh had 17 saves.
