The Highland Hawks' lone loss last boys tennis season came against Covenant during the semifinals of the VISAA Division II state tournament.
Highland got a little revenge Friday for that season-ending loss.
The Hawks opened the 2014 season with a 5-4 win over Covenant at home in Warrenton, giving them a victory in 15 of their past 16 matches over two seasons. Highland swept the top three singles matches, 8-4 each, added a win at No. 6 singles and then clinched with a No. 2 doubles victory.
Hawks No. 1 singles player Jack Thomas (Wofford College) defeated Sam Adamson, while No. 2 Adam Fenton (Elon University) beat Matthew Rose and No. 3 Rich Gerhardt defeated William Rose. No. 6 Tim Bartz beat Chris Boland, 8-1, while No. 4 Ward Van de Water lost to Kevin Coleman, 8-4, and No. 5 Jonathon Finley fell to Roger Wang, 8-5.
In doubles action, Thomas and Gerhardt lost to William Rose and Adamson, 8-2, at No. 1, while Fenton and Bartz beat Coleman and Matthew Rose, 8-5, at No. 2, and Van de Water and Massie fell to Wang and Roland, 8-6.
