A mail truck caught fire in the Broad Run area Monday morning – which didn't deter its driver from salvaging the mail inside.

At 1:12 p.m. Monday, firefighters got the call for a mail truck on fire in the 5000 block of Fairview Lane, according to Col. Paul Mercer with the Fauquier County Sheriff's Office.

The postal worker said he saw smoke coming from the front cab, said Mercer.

Veronica Unmazor, who lives on Fairview Lane, was headed to Lord Fairfax Community College when she saw the mail truck, its front in flames, next to her grandfather’s mailbox.

“The mail carrier was in the back, loading the mail out of the truck, while the truck was on fire,” Unmazor said. “I was telling him not to get back in. He was like, ‘I’m almost done, I’m almost done.’”

A mechanical failure started the fire, according to Mercer.
