With a pair of home runs and seven RBIs by Jessie Goodwin, the Fauquier Falcons qualified for the Class 4A state softball tournament by beating Bassett, 9-7, Wednesday on the road during the semifinals of the 4A North Region tournament.
Fauquier (18-6) advanced to play Woodgrove (23-2) on the road Friday in the region final and will then play an undetermined opponent June 13 in the state tournament at Liberty University.
Against Bassett, with the game tied, 6-6, after five innings, Goodwin hit a three-run home run that scored pinch runner Shelby Hightower (Angelle Marshall single) and Robyn Fletcher (walk) to give the Falcons the lead for good, 9-6. Bassett pinch hitter Tess Severt scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth, but the Bengals never threatened again.
Goodwin went 3-for-3 on the day with a stolen base. Her first home run, a three-run shot in the top of the fourth inning, gave Fauquier a 5-1 lead. She drove in Hightower (Marshall single) and Leann Brown (walk).
Bassett later tied the game, 6-6, with a four-run bottom of the fifth inning. Ashlee Turner hit a three-run home run that scored Kendall Varner (error) and Severt (Taylor Mabry single). Whitney Bowers then hit a double and scored on an error.
Fauquier pitcher Tess Miller got the win by allowing three earned runs (four unearned) on 10 hits and three walks while striking out three over seven innings. Mabry took the loss after allowing nine earned runs on eight hits and five walks while striking out eight over seven innings.
Taylor hit a solo home run for the Falcons and finished 1-for-3, while Marshall went 2-for-4 and Brown went 1-for-2 with two runs and a steal. Bassett's Mabry went 3-for-4, while Turner went 2-for-3 and Bowers went 2-for-4 with two runs.
Kettle Run girls soccer 3, Warhill 1
Erika Blevins scored a goal on a penalty kick during the closing minutes Wednesday to seal the Kettle Run Cougars over Warhill, 3-1, in the semifinals of the Class 3A East Region girls soccer tournament at King George High.
With the win, Kettle Run (12-5-2) qualified for the 3A state tournament, in which it will play an undetermined opponent June 13. The Cougars also advanced to play Friday in the region final on the road against John Champe.
All four goals Wednesday were scored in the final 10 minutes. Kettle Run took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Liz Keefer, but Warhill responded with a goal. The Cougars' Emily Brummett then scored the go-ahead goal for Kettle Run off an assist by Taylor Decker.
