The Wakefield Owls upset Fuqua, 60-57, Tuesday on the road in Farmville during the first round of the VISAA Division III boys basketball state tournament.

The ninth-seeded Owls improved their record to 18-9 and advanced to play No. 1 Millwood on Wednesday during the quarterfinals in Petersburg.

Wakefield survived a late charge by No. 8 Fuqua after leading 38-24 at halftime and 48-32 at the end of the third quarter. Wil Rasmussen led the Owls with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Deandre Clark had 14 points, Elie Mutombo had 12 and Andre Ahiagbede had seven.

Ahiagbede added 10 assists and two steals, while Clark had five rebounds and Mutombo had three assists.

Highland boys basketball 71, Atlantic Shores Christian 64

The Highland Hawks upset Atlantic Shores Christian, 71-64, Tuesday on the road in Chesapeake during the first round of the VISAA Division II boys basketball state tournament.

The ninth-seeded Hawks improved their record to 16-7 against No. 8 Atlantic Shores and advanced to play No. 1 Virginia Episcopal on Wednesday during the quarterfinals in Lynchburg.
