Steve Parker, principal of Cedar Lee Middle School since 2005, said he almost fell out of his chair when he learned he had been selected as the 2013 Outstanding Middle School Principal of the Year for the state of Virginia by the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals.
“I am honored,” he said. “I feel blessed to be in a place like Cedar Lee and Fauquier County Public Schools, that allows us to have the freedom to do the things that need to be done for kids and to really spread our wings; it’s about innovation and creativity.”
Parker, also the recipient of The Washington Post’s 2013 Distinguished Educational Leadership Award, interviewed for the state award the second weekend in May and learned on June 13 that he had been chosen for the honor. A week and a half later, he found himself at the 86th Annual VASSP Summer Conference at The Homestead in Hot Springs, Va., on June 24 being honored as the Commonwealth’s most outstanding middle school principal.
“I truly think that it’s validation of all the hard work we’ve done as a team [at Cedar Lee],” Parker said. “This will give me the opportunity to spread the word about the good things that are happening here.” He explained that the recognition will entail a lot of travel as he meets with politicians throughout the coming year.
As Virginia’s top middle school principal, Parker is a nominee for the national middle school principal of the year, an honor for which he will interview in September.
