Winning games is often a difficult task to achieve, especially for a team that hasn't done it for a while.
But this is a new season and the Fauquier High girls basketball team is optimistic.
After finishing 3-17 two years ago, the Falcons appeared ready to make a move last winter. Coach George Jolley's crew had more experience and athletic ability, yet Fauquier was unable to translate those elements into victories.
The result was a 2-18 season after the team blew decent second half leads in at least six contests.
Only three seniors were on last year's unit, but one returnee moved and five others opted to concentrate on other sports, leaving six veterans.
The six returning Falcons include Rebeka Embrey, Ashley Newman, Alissa Gibson, Elizabeth Wilcox, Sierra Kroencke and Tiffany Darden.
With 14 girls at the opening practice, Jolley said a recruiting mission was undertaken to increase the numbers, and it worked. "We had to scrounge to get more so we could have two teams," said Jolley. "That tells you where we are."
The search resulted in 19 girls, so the Falcons will field a varsity and a JV. The varsity will carry 11 players, with eight on JV.
The low numbers means a considerable amount of teaching will be necessary, but a Nov. 22 scrimmage at Skyline showed some bright spots.
"I was pleased, we did some good things," Jolley said.
"The girls have good attitudes, and they work hard. We have some decent athletes."
The chief Falcon bugaboo recently has been a failure to take care of the basketball, with 30 or more turnovers per game factoring in many Falcon losses.
Jolley is concerned about that again this winter.
"I would think it would be a little better," he said of his team's ability to cut down on turnovers.
Among the varsity newcomers are Angel Robinson, Kaylee Lamper, Natalie Bennett, Kellie Seeley and Lisa Schonen.
The JV consists of Victoria Kroencke, Quinn Slaton, Keyonna Washington, Marissa Smith, Ne'shynna Lewis, Meaghan Chesley, Michela Green and Tedria Pollard.
