Jerrelle Benimon again strengthened his resume as one of the best players in college basketball Thursday.
The Towson University senior and Fauquier High graduate was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year for the second consecutive season at the men’s basketball awards banquet.
Benimon became only the eighth player in CAA history to earn the Player of the Year title more than once. He also made the conference’s all-defensive team for the second consecutive season.
The 6-foot-8 forward from Warrenton leads all NCAA Division I players with 20 double-doubles and 11.7 rebounds per game. Benimon’s 363 rebounds set a CAA single-season record and was the fourth highest total in conference history. He previously set that rebounding record last season with 346.
This season in the CAA, Benimon ranked third with 3.7 assists per game, fourth with 18.9 points, fifth with 1.3 blocked shots and sixth with 35.9 minutes played. He also ranked fourth in field goal shooting at 52.8 percent and sixth with a 1.1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Towson finished the regular season with a 22-9 record and went 13-3 to finish second in the CAA standings. The No. 2 Tigers will next play Saturday in the CAA tournament quarterfinals against No. 7 James Madison.
