The Fauquier Community Food Bank took in more than 5,400 pounds of food over the last few days as Fauquier residents stepped up for the Day to Serve.
On Friday, Warrenton Middle School students dropped off 1,415 pounds of food and Marshall Middle School students donated 1,011 pounds, said Roland Serrano, director of the Fauquier Community Food Bank. Both middle schools hosted competitions between homeroom classes. Over the past few weeks, students attempted to out-raise one another to fight hunger.
On Saturday, the "official" Day to Serve, the food bank collected 3,036 pounds of donations, Serrano said. Much of that haul came from Warrenton's Catholic and Mormon congregations, who joined forces to collect donations at the Giant supermarket in Warrenton.
