Fauquier County schools honored for Advanced Placement performance

Tuesday, Nov. 13 | By Alisa Booze Troetschel

The College Board named Fauquier County Public Schools (FCPS) to the Third Annual AP District Honor Roll today. FCPS is one of 12 school divisions in Virginia to receive this recognition. The other 11 localities are Bristol, Chesterfield County, Gloucester County, Hampton City, Northampton County, Portsmouth, Powhatan, Prince William, Roanoke County, Rockingham County, and Virginia Beach City.

FCPS grew access to Advanced Placement (AP) courses and at the same time maintained or increased the number of students earning a grade on them that qualifies for college credit.

FCPS requires all AP students to take the course exam. A score of three or better qualifies the student for college course credit.

Three hundred and sixty-two students took 644 tests in 2004, which was the first year that FCPS made taking the exam mandatory. In 2012, 814 students took 1,432 tests. The pass rate grew from 34 percent in 2004 to 42 percent in 2012.
