UPDATED: Fatal accident on I-66, fuel truck overturns
UPDATE: I-66 will now re-open around 2 p.m., according to the latest VDOT report.
Early this morning, a Corolla spun out of control and struck a tanker truck at the 11 mile marker on I-66 in Warren County.
"The driver of the tanker truck, Warren E. Wood, 61, of Broadway, Va., died at the scene," said Corinne N. Geller, public relations director for the Virginia State Police. "He was wearing a seat belt."
The sedan was driven by Yon Kim, 23, of Stephens City, Va.
Both westbound lanes are shutdown, and a detour is set in place at exit 23 in Fauquier.
"Follow Route 17 north to Route 50 west," said Lou Hatter with Virginia Department of Transportation. "This route will take them to Interstate 81 in Frederick County, about 13 miles north of the I-66 junction."
Police are still on the scene of the fatal accident which occurred at 2:39 a.m.
"A Toyota Corolla was traveling west on I-66 when it lost control and spun out in the roadway," said Geller. "The Toyota struck a westbound tanker truck, which then ran off the right side of the interstate and overturned."
The tanker was hauling about 8,000 gallons of fuel, but it did not rupture.
Kim, the driver of the Corolla, was not injured in the crash, and has been charged with reckless driving.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
