Melvina Brown has already qualified for the AA state indoor track and field meet and her Kettle Run Cougars just opened the 2012-13 season Wednesday at Brentsville in a quadrangular with Fauquier, Liberty and Brentsville.
Brown finished the 55-meter hurdles in 9.14 seconds to beat the state time standard of 9.16, which also broke a Kettle Run record. She also broke a school record in the long jump (16 feet, 11 inches) to qualify for the Region II meet in that event and three others.
Elsewhere, Cara Phillips qualified for the region meet in two events and set a Kettle Run record by jumping 4-10 in the high jump, while Lucas Farmer and Geneva Doores also set school records and qualified for regionals. Farmer ran the mile in 4 minutes, 53 seconds and Doores threw the shot put 30-7.
The Cougars’ other two-event region qualifiers were Austin Lewis, Josh Tapscott, Connery Ryon and Brad Houska. Their one-event region qualifiers were Riley Perrin, Matt Eggers, Lauren Schlenker, Jed Dalton, Marshall Adzima, Adam Donaldson, Jason Crosby, Austin Rodgers and Rose Wilkers.
