Despite 18 points from Matt Kelly, the Highland Hawks lost to Covenant, 66-44, Friday on the road in Charlottesville.
“We weren't ready to play,” Hawks coach Jake Shechtman said. “They played every part of the game a little better than we did. … I think in the long run we will be OK if we learn from this game.”
Logan Miller had 10 points and seven rebounds for Highland (2-2), while Rahji Johnson had nine rebounds and seven points, and Nicky Sim had four assists and four points.
Kettle Run girls swimming 215, Culpeper 67
Kettle Run boys swimming 185, Culpeper 95
The Kettle Run Cougars won 19 of 22 events Friday in their season-opening swim meet to beat the Culpeper Blue Devils at the WARF.
The Kettle Run girls won, 217-67, by finishing first in all 12 girls events, while the Kettle Run boys won, 185-95.
Scott Heckathorn led the boys with a hand in four first-place finishes, including a victory in the 50-yard freestyle with a state-qualifying time of 23.19 seconds.
Camilla Brizzi also made the state cut in the girls 50 free with a winning time of 25.64. She also won 100 free (57.86) the 200 medley relay with Kathleen Heenan, Julia Roda and Peyton Helou (2:01.72), and the 200 free relay with Helou, Allison Baccus and Amber Smith (1:48.89).
Roda also won the 200 free (2:13.40), 100 butterfly (1:04.70) and 400 free relay with Heenan, Smith, and Hanna Pezza (4:10.00), while Helou won the 200 individual medley (2:27.69), Heenan won the 100 backstroke (1:04.49), Baccus won the 100 breaststroke (1:16.53) and Hanna Pezza won the 500 free (6:31.68).
For the Kettle Run boys, Heckathorn also won the 100 free (51.25), the 200 free relay with Nicholas Fallows, Connor Keating and Ryan Kelly (1:38.75), and the 400 free relay with Fallows, Kelly and Keating (3:39.78). Plus, Kelly won the 200 free (2:06.91), while Fallows won the 200 IM (2:20.20), Keating won the 500 free (6:03.26) and Justin Helou won the 100 breast (1:14.81).
Fauquier girls swimming 215, Liberty 58
Fauquier boys swimming 107, Liberty 80
The Liberty Eagles began the 2013-14 swim season Friday with a loss to the Fauquier Falcons at the WARF.
The Fauquier girls won 215-58, while the Fauquier boys won 107-80.
Parker Smith led the Liberty boys win a victory in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 breaststroke, while Abby Culver led the Liberty girls with a win in the 200 IM and 50 freestyle.
Shawn Michanco and Jacob Dubnowski combined for four runner-up finishes.
Fauquier boys basketball 54, King George 53.
The Fauquier Falcons squeaked by King George, 54-53, Friday on the road to win their second consecutive boys basketball game.
Jeremiah Blackwell led Fauquier (2-1) with 27 points on 9-for-15 shooting, while Jay Jay Roberts had 12 points on 6-for-10 shooting. Blackwell also had three assists and four rebounds, while Roberts had seven rebounds and two assists.
