Damage found in Ashville Road bridge

Tuesday, Dec. 17 | By Mark Grandstaff | Google+
The bridge that carries Route 723 (Ashville Road) over Interstate 66 near Delaplane has been temporarily narrowed following a recent safety inspection.

he routine inspection by the Virginia Department of Transportation showed structural damage to the bridge’s superstructure. As a result the bridge has been reduced from 24 feet to 18 feet in width. Two-way traffic will be maintained, but motorists will notice a shift in the travel lanes to avoid the damaged area.

Plans to repair the bridge are being developed. About 1,100 vehicles use this segment of Route 723 daily.

The bridge was built in 1960 and is inspected every year in accordance with National Bridge Inspection Standards.
