Costco could be headed to Fauquier.
The warehouse retailer, which had plans to come to New Baltimore about five years ago, has expressed interest in coming to another location in the county, Supervisor Chris Granger confirmed earlier this week.
Granger said that Costco has looked at sites from New Baltimore to Opal and seems interested in the Warrenton area.
The Issaquah, Wash.-based company is considering multiple sites, including one north of the municipality, Granger told the Warrenton Town Council last month. It also has looked at spots near Walmart and Home Depot.
Granger said that the county's Economic Development Department has assisted Costco with examining potential locations.
He said that the firm probably would employ about 60 people if it opened a store here, and that the chain is known as a "good employer."
Costco would be an excellent addition to the commercial tax base in the county, as well, Granger said.
"We want them," he said.
Costco representatives could not immediately be reached for comment Tuesday.
Though negotiations with prospective businesses are often hush-hush, rumors about Costco have been going around the area for some time.
And Mayor George Fitch and members of the Warrenton Town Council also have expressed concerns about some of the potential sites and have said they want to make sure they're part of the discussion if Costco is going to be in or near the municipality.
"I understand the county’s desire for a Costco from numerous standpoints, including tax revenue, jobs and making more shopping opportunities available," Councilman Powell Duggan said in an email Monday. "Yet with most of the potential sites being just outside Warrenton or in the town limits, I believe the town residents should be given a chance to express their views on what sites would be best in keeping with preserving the character of the town and its gateways."
A Warrenton-area Costco could draw customers from a wide area, considering the company's closest locations to Fauquier now are in Manassas and in Spotsylvania County.
Carl Sachs, economic development director for Culpeper County, said a Costco in Fauquier's county seat could be positive for the region.
"I think it would do good from a Culpeper perspective," Sachs said, though he noted that he of course would prefer the chain come to his county.
He said that he's shopped at the Costco in Spotsylvania and would definitely go to another location if it was even closer to Culpeper.
