It’s hot out, and you’re probably craving some sweet treats to cool you down. Instead of spiking your blood sugar with Slurpees or ice cream, try some satisfying healthy juices and smoothies made with fruits, vegetables and healthy natural products. Fauquier Friday has put together some recipes for smoothies and juices that will give you energy, fill you with protein and indulge your sweet tooth.

Watermelon mineral slushie
A light, bubbly, fluffy and delicious drink that tastes better and is better for you than any Slurpee.

What you need:
A can of lime Perrier water
A couple of slices of watermelon
A juicer or blender

How to make it:
Put a couple of slices of watermelon in your juicer or blender.
Pour a little Perrier in.
Try blending together, and add either more watermelon or Perrier until you get the consistency that you want.
If you want your slushie to be thicker, add more watermelon. If you want it to be more juicy, add more Perrier.

Berry protein energy smoothie
This filling, energizing smoothie is perfect for making to drink on the go for breakfast, after a work out or as a meal replacement.

What you need:
Whey protein powder
Coconut or almond milk
Black berries
A banana
Spinach
Chia seeds (optional)
A juicer or blender

How to make it:
Combine the banana, coconut or almond milk, a handful of black berries, a pinch of spinach leaves and whey protein powder in your juicer or blender.
Blend the ingredients until completely smooth. Make sure that the spinach leave are totally blended, especially.
Sprinkle some chia seeds on top if you wish. The seeds are a great add-on that expand in your stomach and make you feel more full.

Zesty kale juice
Drinking this tangy, fresh juice is a great way to get some of your daily veggies in, without eating a salad.

What you need:
Dark or curl kale
Celery
Green apple
Cucumber
Lemon with peel removed
A juicer or blender

How to make it:
Juice the kale first.
Add the cucumber and blend.
Add the green apple and blend more.
Then add the lemon and blend a final time.
