The Kettle Run Cougars won all five of their matches Saturday to claim the Mustang Invitational volleyball tournament championship at Monticello High on the road in Charlottesville.
In the title match, the Cougars beat Liberty Christian, 2-1, after winning three pool play matches and advancing to the semifinals, in which they beat Monticello, 2-0. Kettle Run (5-1) also beat Liberty Christian in a pool play match, 2-1, getting revenge against a team that defeated the Cougars each of the past two seasons in the invitational.
Also in pool play Saturday, Kettle Run beat Stuarts Draft, 3-0, and Luray, 2-1.
Over the five tournament matches, Melvina Brown led the Cougars with 47 kills and 57 digs, while Rebecca McGilvery had 42 kills, eight aces and 45 digs. Emily Pross added eight aces, while Catie McCarthy had seven blocks, Eve Williamson had 121 assists and Caroline Twigg had six blocks.
