Auburn Middle School's civics students have written letters to U.S. Rep. Robert Hurt (R-Va. 5) in the wake of Congress's inability to reach consensus on a federal budget. As the shutdown grinds on, Fauquier County's future voters are making themselves heard.
Below are selected letters written and sent by Auburn Middle students to Rep. Hurt:
Dear Representative Hurt,
I am going to a middle school in Warrenton and I am learning about the First Amendment. I have learned how to petition the government. The government shutdown has affected millions of families. We need to agree on a budget and forget about Obama Care right now.
My local National Park is Manassas Battlefield Park. Even though I have not been there I would like to, but this government shutdown has made that impossible. You can deal with Obama Care later, but I would get rid of it as soon as possible. That budget needs to be set right now because it is bad for America. What is good is that the schools aren't affected because my parents teach at schools.
To agree on a budget, average the last five budgets, then give the number to the Senate. They will approve it and then pass it to the President. He will approve it then everyone is happy.
P.S. I hope to be part of the government some day.
Dear Representative Hurt,
My name is Katerina Rentzsch and my seventh grade civics class is learning about the First Amendment and our rights that are protected under this amendment. The First Amendment says that we all have the right to petition, and that's what I plan to do.
If you ask me I do not approve of the government shutdown. This shutdown is affecting so many people in so many ways. Many of my friends' parents are being furloughed like a lot of the other people who work for the government. One of my friend's parents both work for the government. Her mom was called "essential" while her dad wasn't.
I don't think it's fair that her parents and many other people are not getting paid while you and your fellow congressmen are being paid to fight about Obama Care and our budget. I respect you and everyone else in the government but right now you and everyone else remind me of me and my siblings fighting with each other.
And pretend for a moment you live in China or New Zealand or someplace out of the United States. And pretend you spend a lot of money to take a vacation to the U.S. to see all the exhibits and museums. Would you like it to come to the parks to find that they are closed due to our government shutdown?
I also believe that we should not fund Obama Care (affordable health care). It's not that I'm against everyone having access to health care, it's just I don't want it to be funded at the moment. With all our debt we need to worry about paying that off not worrying about health care because I'm pretty sure health care can wait. I hope you take my letter into consideration but I hope you aren't offended by it.
