The Wakefield Owls had three players score at least two goals apiece, but they still lost to the Fredericksburg Academy girls lacrosse team, 13-8, Wednesday on the road.

Wakefield (1-5) went on a 5-0 run to begin the second half, but couldn’t fully overcome its 9-3 halftime deficit.

Shelby Sipes and Sarah Steenson each score on all three of their shots, while Emily Granruth scored two goals on five shots. Gabby Castano had the Owls’ lone assist.

Highland softball 8, St. Catherine's 1

The Highland Hawks blew open a close game in the sixth inning Wednesday to beat the St. Catherine softball team, 8-1, at home in Warrenton.

Highland led only 2-1 entering the bottom of the sixth, but finished strong to improve its record to 5-3.

Sophomore Julia Granato led the Hawks with a three-RBI triple, while eighth grader Hailey Place had two RBI and a triple on 2-for-2 hitting. Senior pitcher Jessica Shaw struck out seven to get the win.

Fredericksburg Christian baseball 14, Highland 12

Despite out-hitting the Fredericksburg Christian baseball team, the Highland Hawks lost, 14-12, Wednesday on the road.

Highland finished with 14 hits to Fredericksburg’s 12 and built a lead as large as 10-3. However, Fredericksburg used an eight-run fifth inning to beat the Hawks (4-3 overall, 1-2 Delaney Athletic Conference).

Eighth grader Graeme Wright led Highland with three RBI, a run and double on 3-for-5 hitting, while junior J.P. Graham had four runs and an RBI on 4-for-5 hitting.

Graham took the loss in relief, allowing 10 runs (three earned) on five walks and five hits while striking out four over 1 2/3 innings. Senior Demitri Batistas pitched the first three innings, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out two.

Liberty baseball 13, Eastern View 7

The Liberty Eagles used six doubles, and 14 hits overall, to beat the Eastern View baseball team, 13-7, Wednesday on the road in Culpeper.

Quentin Rodney (three hits) and C.J. Lindsay each had a pair of doubles to improve the Eagles’ record to 8-2 (2-0 Evergreen District). Also hitting doubles were Andrew Summers (three hits) and Derek Dueling, while Austin Booth and Chris Vorrath also had a pair of hits, and Wyatt Teller added two RBI.

Logan Aylor got the win by striking out seven over five innings.
