Slaughterhouse Plans Worry Nearby Neighbors
Whether the proposed changes to the Lebanese Butcher Slaughter House in Warrenton will ultimately make things better or worse depends on who you ask.
The slaughterhouse is located behind Tom Frost Firestone on West Shirley Avenue. The Moffett Manor apartment complex is also nearby.
Dave Jenkins, owner of Tom Frost Firestone, is furious about the plans. He believes the owners of the slaughterhouse proposed the changes in order to increase production.
If the Town of Warrenton approves the plans, it will be disastrous not only for his business, but for neighboring businesses and residents, Jenkins insists.
“There is nothing I have seen in writing or in the plans that will solve the documented issues that myself and my neighbors have raised [over the years],” Jenkins said, an offensive smell being foremost among them.
Jenkins said there is nothing in the plans to indicate the outdoor pens, which are a significant source of the foul smell emanating from the slaughterhouse.
Falls Church architect Pat Snyder submitted the conceptual plan on behalf of the Lebanese Butcher Slaughter House.
She said it is part of an ongoing effort to address neighborhood concerns.
“We've had plans [before town zoning officials] for more than a year,” Snyder said. “Zoning kept coming back with additional suggestions to address [ongoing] concerns about the smell.”
