Liberty's Record-Breaking Boys Tennis Season Ended by Albemarle, 5-1

While Tobin won his match at No. 1 singles against his Albemarle opponent, things looked bleak for the rest of the Eagles in last Thursday's Northwest Region semifinal match in Bealeton.

Eagle No. 2 singles player Michael Antonowics had been ousted first, 6-0, 6-1. Soon No. 6 Riley Little was to fall, 6-2, 6-1.

Also going down was No. 3 Josh Rinker, 6-3, 6-3.

Then No. 5 Walker Riley lost, 6-3, 6-3.

With five of the six singles matches done, only Massei was left playing, and if he didn't win, there would be no reason to start the three doubles matches, since the Eagles would be eliminated by a 5-1 score.

Massei led 5-4 in the first set, but could not hold it, and dropped his No. 4 singles match, 7-5, 6-1.

“Albemarle was a little tougher. They all had a little too much game for us,” said LHS coach Gabe Zakkak about Albemarle's 5-1 victory. “Our strength all season is our depth and the lower part of the lineup, but their four, five and six were all solid.”

The loss — just Liberty's second of the year — ended the finest season in Eagle tennis history at 14-2. A week earlier the Cedar Run District champions dispatched Patrick Henry, 5-2, in the region quarterfinals.
