Fauquier's Jordan Prefers Superheroes With Flaws

Phonsy Jordan’s warm-up wardrobe couldn’t have been more appropriate.

During the Northwest Region track and field meet Friday at the University of Virginia’s Lannigan Field in Charlottesville, the Fauquier High hurdler wore a shirt with Batman’s logo on it, not the Superman symbol so many athletes flock to.

Superman just doesn’t seem the hurdler type. He can leap tall buildings in a single bound, after all, so a couple high hurdles don’t pose much challenge. Batman, on the other hand, is an imperfect superhero, “A real man – no super powers,” as Jordan said.

So it was fitting that Jordan, too, was imperfect Friday. He clipped the first hurdle in the 300-meter race, which threw his timing off the rest of the way. Yet, Jordan fought through the adversity to finish third and qualify for states.

Fellow Fauquier hurdler Donte Zimmerman also had a super race in the 110 hurdles, finishing fourth. He set a personal-record time, as did Jordan in the 300.

“I’m pretty pleased,” Jordan said after his race, again wearing his black Batman shirt. “The hurdles threw me off balance a lot. I started to stumble and then I would stutter-step to the rest of the hurdles because I didn’t want to hit it again. But I had speed to back it up.”

Jordan fell behind as far as fifth, but improved over the final 100 meters and overtook Potomac’s Devin Brewer on the last hurdle to finish in 39.96. He had entered regionals with a seed time of 40.03 and had never run below 40 in his career.

“To me, when you break 40….that’s getting over the hump,” Fauquier coach Quentin Jones said. “That’s the first time I’ve really seen him run really, really aggressive. He really chased people down. I was proud of that. This was a big race for him...”
