Anglican Priest Takes Circuitous Route to Christ Church

Next month, The Rev. Jeff Anderson will be officially installed as rector of Christ Church in Warrenton, a post he has unofficially fulfilled since last fall.

As a cleric, Anderson apparently puts considerable faith in the proposition that the Lord helps those who help themselves.

He very well may sermonize about Christian love on Sundays, but he spends Mondays through Fridays as director of policy and standards at the National Intelligence University, where turning the other cheek is not an operative philosophy.

His role at NIU, Anderson said, is mostly administrative.

"I don't actually teach classes as much as I evaluate them, design curricula and try to support the development of senior intelligence officers," he said.

Those officers include CIA chiefs of station, national intelligence representatives, people who work for the National Security Council — generally "folks who have 15 to 20 years' experience who are now taking on a new role," he said. "We try to prepare them for that new role."

Wearing the collar and trying to collar terrorists are not mutually exclusive pursuits, Anderson said. That's an assessment forged by long experience with both spiritual matters and military matters.

"The central issue with Muslim churches," Anderson said of the too-frequent violent intersection of those two worlds, "is that you don't have central control of the understanding of the faith. Each imam is able to interpret the faith as he sees fit.
