Spunky Kettle Run falls to Brentsville, 5-0, in softball playoffs
Usually the final game of your high school career has a sad air about it.
Every team has a senior or two removing his or her uniforms for the last time, and feeling typically emotional.
But Kettle Run has no seniors, meaning there were no tears after the Cougars' season-ending 5-0 softball loss to Brentsville in Friday’s Northwestern District quarterfinals. Only a cluster of girls nibbling on post-game sweets and acting like carefree high school freshmen, which most of them are.
“This was not our best showing, but as our team matures, games like this will become less daunting,” said Kettle Run coach Jessica Murphy.
Considering the skill and resume of their talented opponent, seventh-seeded Kettle Run (5-14) played a competitive game.
No. 2-seeded Brentsville (14-3) is the reigning Northwestern District champion and is playing for the league's second regional berth after finishing second in the regular season behind Sherando.
The Cougars went up against Brentsville’s No. 1 pitcher, Grace Nordan, who recently returned after being hit in the head by a batted ball earlier this season against Handley.
Nordan was really tough, allowing just three singles, and going 2-for-4 at the plate.
But the Cougars and pitcher Christine Bowman were tough in their own way.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, it looked a bit bleak for the Cougars as the Tigers continued to prowl the basepaths.
But Bowman ended the first, second and third innings by craftily escaping some jams, thanks in part to some fine defense, and the game remained reasonably close throughout.
“They had seen me two times, so I had to change a lot of things, and mix it up a lot,” said Bowman. “I tried to keep it inside.”
Kettle Run — which lost to Brentsville 9-5 and 1-0 in the regular season — never really came close to scoring, however, and ran out of time.
