Brittany Aubrey’s first career home run propels LHS over FHS, 2-1

Maybe dreams really do come true on Senior Day.

Liberty left fielder Brittany Aubrey, who had never hit a home run in her three years as a Eagle varsity softball starter, crushed the first pitch she saw in the bottom of the fifth inning for a dramatic home run that provided the winning margin in Wednesday's 2-1 victory over Fauquier.

Aubrey’s blast was a long, high, majestic shot up the left field line. It landed about 10 feet past the fence.

Aubrey said she didn’t watch the ball’s heroic flight.

“I was running hard to first but then I saw (assistant coach) Ryan (Washington) and she was smiling,” said Aubrey.

“It’s my first home run, it’s pretty exciting,” said Aubrey, who was honored with flowers before the game along with fellow senior Bethany Cooper.

Aubrey’s homer broke a 1-1 tie in another typically entertaining battle of county rivals.

While neither FHS (6-12) or LHS (4-14) is a Cedar Run District contender, there were playoff implications as each team needed to win to finish in sixth place, and thus avoid a district tournament opening game with No. 1 Battlefield and No. 2 Loudoun Valley.

The district quarterfinals begin Monday, with No. 5 seed Liberty likely visiting Osborn and No. 7 Fauquier visiting Loudoun Valley.

Fauquier took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on senior first baseman Sam Stewart’s long home run to left. Like Aubrey, Stewart also ran hard around the bases like she wasn’t expecting her clout to go out. Just like Aubrey’s homer, Stewart’s hit cleared the fence by an ample margin.

A Fauquier mental mistake helped Liberty tie it at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth.

Ashlyn Lindsay led off with a single and stole second. FHS pitcher Sarah Kleinfelter then struck out Kendall Aubrey for the second out and started walking off the field as Falcon catcher Mel Eckberg rolled the ball back to the pitcher’s circle.

Seeing that, Lindsay took third. She then scored when Brandi Cantrell delivered an infield single to shortstop. The Falcons recorded an out on the next batter, making the run unearned...
