Warrenton Pair Ready for Angling Adventure

Jeff Turner can't recall exactly what his wife said, remembering only what he heard when he broached his vacation vision about a year ago: Great idea, go on with it.

The bit of reticence that even the enthusiastic Turner began to hear in subsequent conversations might have had something to do with the trip's escalating price tag.

As the planning proceeded, the estimate for Turner's quest to cross the country and fish in 50 states in 50 days with his son Taylor reached nearly $50,000.

Ultimately, when father and son leave on June 12, the trip will end up costing a fraction of that, thanks to the kindness of strangers — sponsors, suppliers and guides wanting to be a part of the quest more than they want their regular fees — thanks to friends still unmet across the country, who have been e-mailing the father/son duo with offers of help..

Corporations have gotten on board — Wrangler is sponsoring the clothing, for example. Others are supplying GPS systems, laptops, cameras, rods and reels, even bug spray.

ESPN signed on to host streaming video of the fishing on its Web site and offered an Internet home for photos and a journal. The sports network's cyberspace coverage is in addition to Turner's own Web site, www.fish5050.com .

Details, details, details —and all beside the point, in the end, Turner said: The trip is not about money. The trip, he believes, is beyond price.
