FHS Boys Outgunned By Bobcats in Playoffs, 17-4

Perhaps the most violent cross checks of the game were the one Alex Towers laid on his own head.

A Fauquier High defenseman, Towers repeatedly slammed his stick into his helmet after the Battlefield boys lacrosse team scored its 12th goal Saturday during a 17-4 victory in the Cedar Run District tournament quarterfinals.

It was that kind of game for the Fauquier Falcons. It’s been that kind of season.

“This is a microcosm of what we did all season — underperformed what we could have done,” Fauquier coach Reed Gillespie said. “That’s the sad part of it.”

Fauquier still finished with a respectable 7-7 record overall despite losing the likes of all-district players Jon McCulla and Doug Galvydis as well as district player of the year Thorne Watkins to graduation after last season. But that was no consolation, as Fauquier went 2-5 in district play and placed sixth after contending the last two seasons.

Meanwhile, the Battlefield Bobcats have had one of the most successful seasons in their five-year history. They improved to 9-4 (5-2 district) with the win over Fauquier, which was their first victory as a program in the district tournament. That historic postseason win came after Battlefield placed third in the Cedar Run during the regular season, which they actually considered a disappointing finish.

“We felt like we should have been a team fighting for first place, so our guys have something to prove in the district tournament,” Battlefield coach Kevin Marsh said. “We had a tough loss to Osbourn Park that knocked us down there [to third].”

The Bobcats looked every bit a title contender against Fauquier, passing with superb speed and accuracy. They flung the ball around perimeter quickly to open up gapping cutting lanes in Fauquier’s defense, and they worked particularly well from behind the net to create shots...
