Despite broken leg, Boyd plays in season-ending Falcon loss

Supporting a fractured fibula is not among the suggested usages for ACE Brand bandages.

Ohlivia Boyd wrapped her broken leg with them anyway Thursday, and then she played in the final girls lacrosse game of the season for the Fauquier High Falcons, a 10-6 loss to Osbourn in the Cedar Run District quarterfinals.

It’s not that Boyd didn’t read the product details, bandages simply offered the best support for her leg after she removed a cast from it.

Fauquier’s leading-scorer before suffering the broken fibula in an April 22 game against Kettle Run, Boyd only played the final 10 minutes Thursday. The senior did little more than limp around the goal area, and she couldn’t spur Fauquier to victory, but she made it onto the field one last time before graduation and that was the intent.

“It was kind of a symbolic gesture, considering it was her last game, her last opportunity to play,” said Don Russo, an assistant varsity coach filling in for head coach Paul Stuart. “We wanted to get her on the field in hopes she could score a goal in one more game.”

Boyd failed to score, though, and the Osbourn Eagles finished the game on a 4-0 run over the final 10 minutes. The Falcons (6-8) had rallied from a 5-3 deficit at the start of the second half to tie the game at 6-6 with 11:37 remaining, but they couldn’t squelch the quick transitions Osbourn used to score all night.

Regardless, Fauquier gave the third-seeded Eagles a scare, playing well for a sixth-seeded team.

“We’re sad it’s over, but overall we played good,” Mary Beth Hume said. “It’s the best game that we played as a team. We were passing, we were looking for everyone…We should have played the entire season like this.”

With Boyd injured, the Falcons used a balanced attack and got goals from Clair Spector, Anna McCulla, Elanie Browning, Star Cope and Hume. No Falcon scored over the final 11 minutes, though, and six goals simply weren’t enough...
