The Highland softball team and Highland boys lacrosse team have the best chances to win state championships this season. The Highland Hawks have won softball titles the last two seasons, and they’ve advanced to the boys lacrosse state final in six consecutive seasons.

The softball team (15-3 record) is ranked No. 2 in D-II behind Greenbrier Christian (17-0), the boys lacrosse team (12-4) is No. 2 in D-II behind Virginia Episcopal School, the girls lacrosse team (7-6) is No. 3 in D-II, the golf team (4-5) is No. 6 in D-II, the girls soccer team (7-5-2) is No. 7 in D-I and the boys tennis team (2-5) is tied at No. 10 in D-II.

Wakefield, meanwhile, has four state-ranked teams. Girls soccer (10-2) is No. 3 in D-II, boys tennis (9-2) is No. 5 in D-II, boys lacrosse (2-8) is No. 6 in D-III and girls lacrosse (3-6) is No. 7 in D-II.

Coming off a rare 11-7 loss to Episcopal on April 30, Kevin Helmick’s Highland boys lacrosse team is scheduled to host a DAC semifinal game Thursday with a postponed regular season game against Wakefield still pending...
