McInnis Sees To It That Liberty Gets First Win
An early season girls lacrosse game on a chilly night in March.
What could be so earth-shaking about that?
A lot if you're a member of the Kettle Run or Liberty high squads, or have a daughter on the team.
The storylines were rich.
Liberty, coming off a 12-5 loss to Fauquier, was hungry for its first win.
Kettle Run, featuring players formerly at LHS, as well as coach Joanie DeGoosh, hoped to show their inaugural program is on the right track.
In the end, Liberty's 12-3 triumph on March 25 was made possible by marvelous solo efforts from senior star Heather McInnis and a nifty debut in goal from junior Harleigh Burgess, who made 10 saves after being elevated into the lineup on short notice.
Looking often unstoppable, McInnis had seven goals in helping her dad Ken win his first game as co-coach with Kim Helsel. “We wanted to go out and show what we were made of. We had a lot of friends on the other team, so it made us a little more relaxed,” said Heather McInnis.
Kettle Run took the lead three times at 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2.
McInnis tied it the first two times with lightning fast strikes that seemed to occur just seconds after the Cougars scored. Both times McInnis sliced through the Cougars like she had a plane to catch, reducing some of her former teammates to spectators.
“When I can build up speed I can put on a fake and then blow by them,” said McInnis, who dressed in black tights for the cool weather and glittery eye shadow perhaps because she expected to celebrate a lot of goals...
