Liberty's revitalized bats can't hold off Stonewall, 10-6

There are worse voices to carry a rally cry than Frank Sinatra’s.

Minutes after Sinatra’s “Strangers in the Night” played over the speakers at Stonewall Jackson’s baseball field in the middle of the fourth inning Friday, the Raiders rallied to tie the Liberty Eagles, a needed spark in their eventual 10-6 victory.

Perhaps it was purely coincidence Sinatra’s slow song coincided with Stonewall’s rally, but Raiders pitcher Jay Jay Zehring did request the tune pregame. He had his catcher, Josh Radford, in mind.

“My man sings it just like Frank Sinatra, so we had to play it once for him,” Zehring said after the Cedar Run District season-opener. “We never knew he could sing quite like he did in the locker room one day. He busted out ‘Strangers in the Night.’”

If nothing else, the playing of Sinatra’s song spoke to the Raiders’ state of mind. Despite falling behind 4-0 in the first inning, they didn’t panic, they didn’t press. They were laid back enough to enjoy the 1960s after the top of the fourth inning and then tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom half.

“Down 4-0, we’re hungry. We definitely wanted to win this one,” Zehring said. “Last year we would have just stayed down, but it’s a new year and these guys really wanted it. I’m proud of them.”
